"Rommel in His Own Words"  Edited by Dr John Pimlott. Greenhill Books, Russell Gardens, London, NW11 9NN, ISBN 1-85367-185-1

I came across this book when I was researching background for a potential biography of Erwin Rommel’s nephew. That project is still being discussed, but I was fascinated to read the book; finding that Rommel’s professional approach to his task inspired an admiration that I’d never considered as a possibility. Nothwithstanding that, by circumstance, we had been on opposing sides of the conflict …

Rommel was, in fact, a very hands-on commander as shown by his quotation on the back cover:

“The enemy gunners then rapid-fired along the road just over our heads. Without returning fire, the tanks ahead of us drove straight up onto the embankment on either side of the road. The lead tank remained where it had been hit. My vehicle was now left standing just 150 metres away from the enemy battery, with shell after shell whistling a hairsbreadth overhead; not a comfortable situation.”    Erwin Rommel
